Financially Fit

pages_13_Financially Fit1.jpgFinancially Fit offers financial education to refugee adults, empowering them and their families with the knowledge needed to successfully navigate our culture’s financial systems, manage limited resources, and embrace a healthy financial lifestyle. The program is offered in several languages taught directly by members of the ethnic groups we serve.

The curriculum centers around visual and experiential learning, and shares principles of banking, budgeting, paying bills on time, proper credit use, and saving for the future. Participants are building a foundation from which they can guard against financial traps and work toward economic goals, continuing them on the path to economic self-sufficiency in this new culture.

  • In the past year, 156 refugees participated in Financially Fit classes, offered in Arabic, Burmese, Karen, and Somali.
  • All participants in the program were guided in the development of a budget with 94% reporting to continue a household family budget at home.
  • 140 of our graduates opened new bank accounts; 12 strengthened existing banking relationships.
  • In total, this year’s graduates earned over $5,000 in incentive funds, a tangible means of applying what they have learned in Financially Fit.
  • 88% of our graduates opened new bank accounts using money earned during the course.
  • In the coming year, Financially Fit will expand to offer the course in 8 languages.
