Hope Refugee Sewing Project

pages_14_Sewing Project1.jpgThe Hope Refugee Sewing Project began in 2008 with the vision to empower refugees through teaching the skill of sewing. The program promotes a greater sense of self-efficacy, enabling students to make clothing and household items for their family, as well as increasing their possibilities of employment and economic independence. The Sewing Project is a creative solution to help refugees, especially women, cultivate profitable skills while overcoming language, literacy, and cultural barriers in this new environment. We support successful integration into our cross-cultural community by fostering friendships between the refugee sewing students themselves as well as with the volunteer teachers we utilize from across Western New York.

  • For the 2010-2011 year, we had a total of 63 new students attend and graduate from our basic classes over the course of seven 5-class sessions. Each of these students received a new sewing machine.
  • There were a total of 20 group workshops. Combined with the classes, we had 55 total gatherings - 29 more than last year!
  • We had an average of 10 volunteers who helped with the classes and workshops over the year.
  • Two Nepali women opened a small booth at the West Side Bazaar.
