Hope Urban Gardening (HUG)
The West Side of Buffalo is considered a “food desert,” which means that finding fresh produce in the area is difficult for everyone, let alone a family who does not speak English. HUG educates refugees about gardening in their own home or yards, and also connects refugee families on the West Side with urban gardening opportunities. This allows families to increase their nutritional intake, reduce their financial burden, meet their neighbors, and adjust to their new culture by using a skill they already have - gardening.
- 80 volunteers contributed a total of over 300 hours to HUG projects.
- This year, in 8 different gardening areas, families grew 4 different types of peppers, corn, varieties of squash, beans, and potatoes. These crops included jalapenos, habaneros, bell peppers, corn, squash, tomatoes, okra, potatoes, lenga lenga, and green beans.
